A marine mammal, the grey seal is much larger than the common seal with a longer head and slopping 'Roman nose' with parallel nostril slits, mainly dark grey in colour some blotches and spots. The Grey seal is approximately 3m in length weighing between 250-350kg and living for 30 - 40 years. They spend most of their time out at sea feeding on fish cold, salmon, herring, squid, octopus and shellfish eating unto 7 kilos a day.
Scotland is home to 1/3 of the worlds population of grey seals. The Isle of May has one of the largest grey seal breeding colonies in the UK. The nursery is so large that the island is closed to visitors from 1 October until Easter to prevent disturbance of the 2,000 grey seal pups born there.
